39th Brigade’s Searcy based 2nd Battalion welcomes new commander ~ Lt. Col. Todd Spafford accepts command of Infantry Battalion’s 700 Soldiers

SEARCY, Ark. – Lt. Col. Todd Spafford, of Cabot, formally accepted command of the 39th Infantry Brigade Combat Team’s 2nd Battalion, 153rd Infantry here Sunday, May 20.

Spafford, who originally joined the Arkansas National Guard in 1985, has held numerous command and staff assignments to include his most recent position as the executive officer for the 39th Brigade. He works full-time for the city of North Little Rock.

This new position as commander of the 2nd Battalion assigns him the responsibility for the overall readiness of the battalion and its 700 Soldiers. The 2nd Battalion is headquartered in Searcy with subordinate units in Wynne, Walnut Ridge, Rector, Batesville, Augusta, Forrest City Brinkley, and Newport with an attached Forward Support Company in Cabot.

The Battalion’s mobilization history includes recent service in Bosnia, Kuwait, Sinai Peninsula, and two deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The battalion spent the past year in preparation for a 2012 deployment to Afghanistan, which was cancelled early this year.

Lt. Col. John Stubbs relinquished command of the 2nd Battalion after taking command Oct. 1, 2010.

Although the Fordyce unit has relocated, the Guard continues to have units based in 60 communities across 
Arkansas capable of responding in support of civil authorities anywhere in the state as necessary.
